Praise for the Book
What an excellent book! I recommend that every new parent receive a copy; it would have a remarkable effect for our next generation! You provide some excellent information, with practical exercises to make parents (and others) more aware of their food intake (e.g., sugar counts). I really love the recipes (with snacks too)! These provide healthy options, which are also appealing to children. I have to admit that since my first reading (8 weeks ago), I have taken your advice and trimmed down 10 lbs--without starving! So your knowledge and ideas work for adults as well.
—Judge, IBPA Benjamin Franklin Awards 2010
I have lost 25 pounds myself and my daughter has lost 16 since we got the book and started with some of the recipes and healthier methods given by the book. No more frying for one. We have all but cut out beef, white flour and pasta, and white and potato bread. There are some oatmeal pancakes as part of the recipes that the kids actually love. We get out as a family and exercise—be it the park or just racing to the corner—cut TV time down and dance more around the house. We have been on a roll. And the best part is they don’t even realize that I have changed so much.

I enjoyed the time I have spent with The No-Diet Obesity Solution for Kids. Dr. Vos gives great practical advice and starting points for many families facing the growing issue of overweight kids—with a realistic dose of consequences that are in store for all people and families if the obesity epidemic is not met head on by committed participants. I agree with the importance of spending a great deal of time with my children, playing, being outside, exercising, and cooking. I really liked the chapter on the "The Hard Facts of Being Overweight." Too many shy away from telling the truth to patients and families, and we are doing them no favor by sugar-coating an already obvious problem. I really was drawn to the chapters on getting started together, raising active children and teens, and the 3 Ps and 3 Cs. I liked the recipes and snack ideas, too.
Dr. Vos does not judge or blame; she merely holds up a mirror and allows people the opportunity to evaluate for themselves what will work and what won't. She reminds us that parents need to be involved and that children will do what you do and not what you say. Parents may want the best for their children, but kids also want what's best for their parents, so the inclusion of the family unit is necessary for success. This book makes that point very well.
Dr. Vos does not give just one suggestion, but many, and encourages families to find their own path. Health and life are flexible and fluid, so families must be the same, and families dealing with concerns or issues need options. This book is a great place to begin and does not leave anyone out with the types of suggestions and information provided."

"Like most others dedicated to turning the tide of epidemic obesity and related health problems in children and adults alike, I have long acknowledged that the problem is bigger than the individual, and the solution needs to be, too. We need policies, programs, and resources that help make eating well and being active the path of least resistance for us all. But in the interim, when focusing on what individuals can and should do, I emphasize three things: health, not just weight; the long term, not the quick fix; and the strength of family unity as opposed to go-it-alone approaches. Dr. Vos serves up similar priorities, and as I read through her book, I routinely found myself nodding my head in enthusiastic agreement, and thinking. ‘I couldn’t have said it better myself!’ Dr. Vos indeed says it well, and what she has to say deserves every parent’s attention. Her book delivers an artful blend of common sense, uncommon insight, practical expertise, and obvious compassion. I think it’s terrific."

"Parents, grandparents, and caregivers will love this step-by-step guide to feeding America's happiest and healthiest children. Dr. Miriam Vos puts it best, 'Truly healthy children are bright-eyed, able-bodied, energetic, and glowing.' The No-Diet Obesity Solution for Kids tells you exactly how to create a positive and healthy relationship between your children and their food. A must-read for anyone with a child in your care."

"The No-Diet Obesity Solution for Kids combats the pediatric obesity edpidemic thoroughly, as this problem is about so much more than food. It is multifactorial in nature. But even more, it is a family issue that must be addressed as such. Dr. Vos gives practical suggestions of how each family can live a healthy lifestyle that is positive and nurturing for not only a child's health, but his or her total well-being."
